OTTAWA – On the eve of the possible destruction of a world renowned research facility, New Democrats are calling on Conservatives to stop their attack on public science and basic research.

 NDP Science and Technology critic Kennedy Stewart (Burnaby – Douglas) will be introducing the following Opposition Day Motion which will be debated tomorrow:

The lack of transparency in the approval process, and an alarming number of unanswered questions, have pushed the NDP to reject, as currently structured, the transaction that would allow the state-owned CNOOC to take over the Canadian company Nexen.

“The Conservatives failed to act in good faith and inform the public of the consequences of this takeover. We’re talking about a company that plays a key role in a critical sector of our economy,” said Natural Resources critic Peter Julian.

Discontent over potential Nexen takeover intensifies

 OTTAWA – The potential takeover of Nexen by the Chinese Company CNOOC continues to divide. New Democrats tabled a motion today calling for public consultations to properly inform Canadians, once and for all, of the impact of this transaction.

As changes to the EI program are penalizing too many Canadians, New Democrats are calling on the Conservatives to review this inadequate and unfair reform. Employment Insurance critic Anne-Marie Day, seconded by Human Resources and Skills Development Critic Chris Charlton, tabled a motion to this affect, today in the House of Commons.

The party urges all parliamentarians to reject Conservative motion to reopen abortion debate

OTTAWA – In advance of this Wednesday’s vote on the Conservative motion to reopen the abortion debate, New Democrats reiterated their commitment to protect women’s right to choose, as well as their right to accessible and safe abortion services.
